After he was reported missing for over a week, a college student from Staten Island resurfaced in a Seattle hotel this weekend. But his parents' feeling of relief quickly dissipated when they realized that their son is refusing to return to Staten Island.
Richard Ghany, 20, has a history of schizophrenia and mental illness, but according to his parents he was remarkably functional up until his disappearance. He recently enrolled at the College of Staten Island, was taking classes in history and media studies, and his parents said they were proud of his growing independence, which included taking the bus by himself. Then, earlier this month, Ghany went off his meds and completely disappeared.
