Mayor Bill de Blasio is turning to some former gang members to prevent future violence.
It’s part of a community outreach program, using $13 million to fund the initiative known as “Violence Interrupters.” The former gang members will try to convince victims of gun violence not to retaliate.
“We have to think of this as a health crisis,” Mayor de Blasio said, arguing that the NYPD can’t tackle the violence problem alone.
The program will also fund job training and tutoring services in the community.
The number of shootings are up 12 percent this year.
