Democratic mayoral candidate Bill Thompson wants every public school student in NYC to get a free lunch. The New York Daily News reports that the former city comptroller expects this to cost the city $20 million.
“Instead of balancing the budget on the backs — or stomachs — of our children, for a relatively small amount of money we can provide all children with a nutritious lunch,” Thompson said (via the Daily News). “We have a moral obligation to make sure that our students aren’t going hungry.”
The Daily News reports that the Bloomberg administration just announced a plan to raise the cost of lunches from $1.50 to $1.75.
