"SNL" Recap: Bad Bunny Hosts & Performs

Bad Bunny hosted “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, and he even pulled double-duty as the musical guest as well!

“Saturday Night Live” jumped into the House speaker race in its cold open this week, with Mikey Day playing a visibly angry and sad Jim Jordan. “All I want to do is get Congress back to work, so I can shut it down again!” he yells. Then James Austin Johnson shows up as Donald Trump, who poke the bear, telling him that he likes “the Jordans that win, like the great Michael Jordan or the even greater Jordin Sparks.”

During the Monologue, Bunny joked that some people thought he couldn’t host the show since English isn’t his first language but “I do whatever I want” but then decided, at least for a little bit, to switch it up and address the crowd in Spanish. But then closed captions “Speaking In Non-English” pop up! Thankfully…Pedro Pascal shows up to help translate!

FYI…Pascal isn’t the only guest star in this weeks episode. Mick Jagger makes a came in “Convent Meeting” and “Telenovela,” and Lady Gaga introduces Bad Bunny’s performance of “UN PREVIEW” later in the night too!

Some of the most talked about sketches were:

  • Telenovela,” where Bad Bunny and Marcello Hernández do their best to get through a scene on a telenovela. Their able to fly through their Spanish lines with ease, but the whole show comes to a grinding halt when Punkie Johnson enters and can’t speak a word of Spanish! It turns out she got the job cause her name was Latina Jefferson…but everything is saved when Mick Jagger makes a cameo as the father of Bunny and Marcello, his first cameo since 1986.
  • Protective Mom 2,” where Marcello brings home his girlfriend, played by new cast member Chloe Troast, to meet his aunt…played by Bad Bunny. Things seem to be going well…until his mother walks in! Played by Pedro Pascal, this is a return of a previous fan favorite sketch, “Protective Mom,” from when Pedro hosted. Pedro loves their little boy…and is not a fan of his girlfriend…ever, it seems.
  • Please Don’t Destroy - Bad Bunny Is Shrek,” where Bad Bunny comes to the Please Don’t Destroy trio ready to do whatever…and also fully dressed as Shrek. When asked if he want’s to do Shrek he agrees as if its not a big deal…and then hands the trio a huge script for his new “Shrek” movie, which includes Michael Jackson as “the main character” and Shrek falling into the sun to save his friends.

Meanwhile on weekend update Colin Jost and Michael Che poked fun at:

  • The House Speaker race, with Jim Jordan dropping out of the race. Che jokes that he should be used to this, because “he was dropped a lot as a child.” He also jokes that among the next people running for House Speaker, six are just George Santos in different disguises
  • Netflix is planning to open a network of brick-and-mortar stores, which Jost says “is like a serial killer walking around in the skin of his victim”
  • Van Leeuwen Ice Cream is putting out new ice cream flavors… including Kraft Mac & Cheese, Kettle Corn, and Dill Pickle. “If any of those sound good to you…uh-oh, you’re pregnant!” Jost jokes.

Finally, Bad Bunny performed “MONACO” and “UN PREVIEW.” Lady Gaga actually ended up making a surprise came right before Bunny’s performance of “UN PREVIEW!” Up next time, comedian Nate Bargatze will host for the very first time. He’ll be joined by the Foo Fighters as the musical guest, their ninth time on the show.
