The holiday season is usually filled with sweet ads that end up going crazy viral. Anybody remember the adorable Extra gum commercial that tells Sarah and Juan's love story through cartoons scribbled on wrappers? The latest ad to go viral, titled "Evan", starts off as a high school love story. Evan scratches the words "I am bored" on the library table. When he comes back the next day, somebody has written a response. The two exchange sweet notes on the table without ever knowing who the other person is. At the end of the year, while signing yearbooks, the pen pals finally meet. And then the video takes a very dark turn.
Watch the video below to see what happens:
The video was created by the ad firm BBDO New York on behalf of Sandy Hook Promise, according to Jezebel. The short video is meant to educate its viewers on the importance of awareness. Nicole Hockley, co-founder and managing director of Sandy Hook Promise, told Adweek that they want to "show youth and adults that they are not helpless in protecting their community from gun violence."
It's definitely an important message, but the video is still pretty upsetting. Here's that cute Extra Gum commercial, just in case you need a bit of a pick me up:
