Just over a week ago, Fifth Harmony unceremoniously announced that group member Camila Cabello would be going solo. Fans of the five girls were shocked and saddened to learn that the group would now be carrying on as a four piece. The split ultimately turned ugly over social media, with the remaining 5H members calling Camila out for how she handled her departure.
While it was certainly surprising to learn about Camila's exit so abruptly, there might actually have been one person who saw this coming from the very beginning. Fifth Harmony got their start after being put together on the singing competition show the X Factor. Demi Lovato was on the judges' panel that year and after Fifth Harmony's first live TV performance, the pop star told the girls that only one of them really "shined."
“The thing is, I know you guys have potential because I saw your performance at the judges’ homes, and that’s when you guys really shined. But I feel like tonight there was only one person that shined,” Demi said, while critiquing their performance of Taylor Swift's song We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. “And really, it didn’t click for me tonight. I wanna see you guys click. I think you need more practice together. You need to come out of your shell a little bit. Right now there’s only one person doing it for me.”
Demi wasn't planning on revealing which 5H member she was talking about, but opened up after being pressed by host Khloe Kardashian. "You," Demi said pointing at Camila. "I think you guys should all learn something from her." Ouch.
This must have been a seriously awkward situation for the newly formed band. Camila did her best to reassure her bandmates, though, by saying "I think we all shine." The group definitely came into their own by the end of the competition, as well as continued to evolve over their time together. Still it seems Demi Lovato may have seen the ending of the Fifth Harmony way back in 2012 when they were just a couple of teens thrown together and covering a Taylor Swift song.
It seems like Camila is ready to shine on her own now. We're excited to see what's next for both her solo career and the future of Fifth Harmony.
