Gilmore Girls fans received the thrill of a lifetime when it was announced that their beloved show would be coming back for a revival on Netflix. It's been a few months since Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life dropped and TBH we're still recovering. After 9 years of wondering what show-runner and creator Amy Sherman-Palladiono, who exited the show after season 6, originally had planned for her iconic story's end. Those final 4 four words became something of a legend amongst Gilmore Girls fans and pop culture aficionados. Well, those words were revealed this past November and they left us with our jaws completely dropped.
It turns out that we weren't the only people shocked to see Gilmore Girls end by revealing Rory Gilmore was pregnant. Alexis Bledel, the actress behind Rory, opened up about the cliffhanger at Deadline's The Contenders Emmys event in Hollywood on Sunday. The actress revealed that she and the rest of the cast were quite surprised to learn about Rory's fate:
It certainly wasn’t the ending I was expecting. I told Amy that I hoped Rory would end on a high note. After all her hard work, I wanted to see her succeed and be thriving. So it was a hard thing for me to digest. I was hoping that we would see that she had lived an interesting life and had been fulfilled up until this point where her grandfather dies and [Rory] comes back home.
Despite having a hard time processing the news, Bledel added that she trusts Sherman-Palladino with the creative vision of the show. “Because I know Amy after all these years, I knew it was her true intention and it was something that satisfied her as a writer because she knew the reaction she was going to get from the audience. So I trusted her.”
We totally understand where Bledel is coming from. Even just as fans, we had a hard time seeing Rory struggle in both her personal and professional live throughout the revival. Instead of being a truly satisfying conclusion to a story we love, it only left us wanting more. While there are constant rumors that Gilmore Girls might come back with another revival series, both Bledel and her co-star Lauren Graham denied having been approached about a follow up.
