NYC Cancels Triathlon, OZY Fest Due To Extreme Heat Concerns

Sweltering Heat Wave Pushes Heat Index Past 100 Degrees In New York City

Officials have determined it's too risky to move forward with two of the biggest events of the weekend, the New York City Triathlon and OZY Fest, due to the heat wave gripping the Tri-State area.

Mayor Bill de Blasio's office announced Friday afternoon that OZY Fest would not take place this weekend, due to the weather.

The decision to cancel the Triathlon was made Thursday evening, as multiple weather advisories and severe heat warnings were issued for the area.

De Blasio signed an executive order Friday declaring a state of emergency due to the heat in the city. The order requires many office buildings to set their thermostats to 78 degrees in an attempt to limit the impact on the power grid and reduce the potential for outages as private citizens crank up their air conditioners.

Friday's high temperatures in the 90s come with a heat index of nearly 100, thanks to humidity measuring well over 60 percent.

Temperatures are expected to peak close to 100 on Saturday, with a heat index of 105. Sunday's highs will also be in the 90s.
