US-WEATHER-ELSA

A number of severe thunderstorms threatened the Tri-State area Monday afternoon, with forecasters predicting damaging winds and torrential downpours for much of the area.

The stormy weather was expected to roll into the New York City area at around 2 p.m. and linger through the afternoon rush until about 7 p.m.

The worst of the storms was expected to hit the city between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., bringing hail, coastal flooding and the potential for isolated tornadoes, according to the Weather Channel.

High winds with gusts of up to 60 mph were possible, causing concern for power outages and property damage throughout the area.

Storms should clear out by 9 p.m. with skies clearing by midnight, making way for sunny, mild weather through the rest of the week.
