A winter storm approaching the New York City area could bring significant accumulation to the city and surrounding area, forecasters say.
Accumulation could approach 1 foot north of the city, in northwestern New Jersey and the Hudson Valley. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for much of the region from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Precipitation is expected to begin late Monday, with periods of heavy snow, rain and a wintry mix. Gusty winds and minor to moderate coastal flooding impacts are possible.
Regardless of accumulation, New Yorkers are in for a complicated Tuesday morning commute. Snowfall rates could approach 1 - 2 inches an hour during the morning rush. Snowfall should taper off by Tuesday evening.
NBC New York's Storm Team 4 forecasted 3 - 5 inches of snow in NYC, but noted that could change depending on the path the storm takes.
Long Island and NJ suburbs closest to NYC could get 5 - 8 inches. Points further north and west of the city could get 6 - 10 inches.
Coastal flood advisories are in effect for NYC and Long Island tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Once the storm passes, New York City is in for cool temperatures for the rest of the week.
