NBC and the Peacock streaming service apologized for being rude to Selena Gomez in the Saved by the Bell reboot. They pledged a donation to the Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research.
In episode six, Bayside High students debated who donated a kidney to Selena Gomez. The kids argued whether the organ donor was her “good friend” Demi Lovato or Justin Bieber’s mother, Pattie Mallette. The students’ phones had been confiscated so they could not Google and resolve the argument.
Selena followers demanded an apology. “Respect Selena” trended on social media. Peacock, NBCUniversal and the show’s executive producers released a statement (quote) “We apologize. It was never our intention to make light of Selena’s health. We have been in touch with her team and will be making a donation to her charity.”
Graffiti appeared on the Bayside High School wall asking, “Does Selena Gomez even have a kidney?” Her actual donor, Francia Raisa ,tweeted “I appreciate the apology but let’s not forget about the donors that potentially felt offended and dismissed from the spray paint written on the wall.”
