Earlier this year Ed Sheeran won a copyright case over his song “Shape of You,” where a judge ruled against two songwriters who claimed the tune was a rip-off of one of their songs. Well, now those songwriters are going to pay for their loss.
A British judge just ruled that Ed is to be awarded $1.1 million, which plays for 90% of his legal bill.
“The starting point is to identify the winners and losers in the action because the general rule is that the unsuccessful party pays the costs of the successful party…,” judge Antony Zacaroli writes in his judgment. “There is no dispute as to this: [Sheeran] undoubtedly won and won on every substantial point.”
