Katie Couric is taking her own breast cancer diagnosis and turning it into a reason to help others.
We told you back in September that the tv news legend was diagnosed with - and successfully battled - breast cancer earlier this year. Now she's turning her misfortune into good fortune and inspiration for others dealing with the disease. Couric has teamed up with organic baby formula company Bobbie and non-profit organization The Breasties, a support group that's created a community for cancer survivors and caregivers, to surprise 111 new moms impacted by the disease with free formula for a year.
Speaking to People magazine, Couric stated, "One of the reasons I wanted to be public about my diagnosis is I know that I have the capability to influence public health in this country and to educate and inform people and arm them with the knowledge they need to live longer lives," adding, "Having children is stressful enough and is a big adjustment and very hard on your body as it is, but (even more difficult) in their situations dealing with cancer diagnoses...I think they were just a remarkable group of women."
