Fifteen minutes before Janet Jackson walked into our studio the news broke that Aretha Franklin has died at the age of 76. Jackson, 52, was shocked when Cubby told her the heartbreaking news. "You're kidding," she gasps, "what a loss."
The conversation continues, "You know she lived around the corner from us growing up," Jackson, explaining how far back her and Franklin actually went, "As a matter of fact, some of her kids.. we used to go to each others homes and play, I remember her opening the door.... Oh that's so sad, what a legend." Jackson continues, "Everyone has at least one song that is their favorite.. I love Respect."
According to the Associated Press, The Queen of Soul passed away in Detroit surrounded by her friends and family on Thursday (Aug. 16). There were many reports on Monday (Aug. 13) that the singer was gravely ill. “I am so saddened to report that the Queen of Soul and my good friend, Aretha Franklin is gravely ill,” Detroit news anchor Evrod Cassimy revealed via Twitter. “I spoke with her family members this morning. She is asking for your prayers at this time."
