Everyone knows that smoking is terrible for your health. However current smokers who haven't been able to kick the habit may soon have to dig deeper into their pockets.
Officials hope to reduce number of smokers in NYC by 160,000 over three years [WSJ]
Currently the price stands at a pricey $10.50 per pack, and this would raise it to $13.
The Wall Street Journal continues:
That proposed local law is one part of a handful of legislative proposals city officials hope will work to reduce the number of smokers in the city by 160,000 over three years. Currently there are 900,000 smokers in the city, including 15,000 youths, according to figures from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
“Tobacco causes one in three heart-disease deaths,” said Mr. de Blasio. “What we’re going to do now is move forward on a plan that will hit tobacco hard on many different fronts and address the problem of smoking in ways that reach down to the grass roots of the city.”
This proposal obviously isn't popular among smokers, but what do you think?
