NEW YORK — Sick passengers on an international flight from that landed at Kennedy Airport Wednesday forced the plane to be quarantined while investigators determined the cause of possible illness.

In a statement, Emirates Airline said it can confirm about 10 passengers are sick on its Flight 203 from Dubai. Sources initially told PIX11 News that about 100 passengers on the flight were ill.

A spokesman for the mayor’s office said 10 passengers have been taken to a hospital.

About 100 passengers including crew members on the flight complained of illness, including cough and some with fever, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement.

Health officials are working to evaluate the passengers, including taking temperatures and making arrangements for those that need care, the CDC said. Passengers who are not ill will be allowed to continue with their travel plans.

So far, about 250 passengers have been cleared to go through customs and “a few others (are) showing symptoms” and are being held for treatment, which may include going to the hospital, Eric Phillips said.

About 521 people in all were on the plane. It’s not known what was making the passengers ill.

A passenger shared photos and tweeted about the ordeal. He said that all passengers had their temperature taken as they deplaned.

The plane was scheduled to land in New York, was not allowed to go to the terminal but instead had been quarantined, Phillips said.

A large emergency response, including personnel from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), were sent to the airport.
